Reynolds, Penz Make Select Teams

posted Sep 6, 2016, 12:40 PM by Apple Valley Hockey

The Apple Valley Eagles had two members of its 2014-15 hockey team, senior Dylan Reynolds and sophomore Branden Penz, selected recently to play in “all-star”-type competition.

Reynolds was selected to play for the Section 3 team in the Ted Brill Great 8 Festival March 27-29 at Wakota Arena. The Ted Brill Great 8 Festival provides high school seniors the opportunity to showcase their skills and abilities to coaches and scouts from junior, collegiate and professional teams in a three-game tournament. Each coach had the ability to nominate players, and a vote is held to determine the 17 player roster. Reynolds, the Eagles leading scorer in 2014-15 with 16 goals, finished with two assists in the tournament.

Penz will be representing Apple Valley in the Section 3A/AA team at the CCM Minnesota Hockey High Performance 16 Spring Festival April 17-19 at Plymouth Ice Arena. Eagle fans can root for Penz and the 3A/AA team at its first game 4 p.m. Friday, April 17 in Rink B as it takes on Section 6A/AA. The CCM program is designed to identify and develop the best players in Minnesota, and to provide the top players from each district or section a chance to play with and against the best players in their area and the state. Players are nominated to try out by their high school coach with a minimum of 40 trying out per section.

The Spring Festival showcases the top 320 16- and 17-year-old players in the state. Fifty-four players, in each age class, are then chosen from the Spring Festival to advance to the Final “54” Tryout where they will be divided into three teams and will play three games April 24-26 at the Plymouth Ice Center. The top players from both the High Performance 16’s & 17’s will then represent Minnesota Hockey at the USA Hockey National Select 16 and Select 17 Festivals this summer in Amherst, New York.

Three former Eagles also were in the news last weekend when junior forward A.J. Michaelson and sophomore forward Hudson Fasching hit the ice for the “U” at the NCAA hockey regional in New Hampshire. Sophomore defenseman Derek Smith was patrolling the blue line for the Quinnipiac Bobcats at the NCAA regional in Fargo.

Stay tuned for upcoming news on Eagle Coach Chris Sikich’s summer hockey camps!
